You bite into something and feel that tooth shift, or worse, snap a little. Or maybe you lost a tooth years ago and just got used to the gap, until it started bothering the teeth around it too. Either way, your dentist mentions a crown, or a bridge, and you nod, not entirely sure what you just agreed to.
Fair enough. Both have been around for decades, long before implants and aligners entered the picture, and they still do the job well.
It is a cap. It goes over a tooth that is too far gone for a simple filling but not so damaged it needs pulling out. Once it is on, the tooth gets its shape, size and strength back, more or less like nothing happened.
Dentists use crowns after root canals to protect the treated tooth. They use them on cracked teeth, or teeth with fillings so large the tooth itself has gotten weak underneath. Sometimes it is just to fix a tooth that looks off, discoloured or oddly shaped. And crowns show up again when there is a bridge to anchor, or an implant that needs a top.
Missing a tooth and do not want that gap sitting there forever? A bridge fills it in by attaching a fake tooth, called a pontic, to the real teeth on either side. Simple idea really, it just bridges the space.
Dentists tend to suggest this option when the teeth next to the gap already need crowns for their own reasons. Doing both at once saves time and often works out cheaper than treating them separately.
Crowns are not all made from the same stuff, and what you pick changes how it looks, how long it lasts, and what you end up paying.
Zirconia has taken over as the popular choice around Ahmedabad lately. It is strong, resists chipping better than most, and looks close enough to a real tooth that most people cannot tell the difference. If the crown is anywhere near the front of your mouth, this usually ends up being the material worth spending a bit more on.
Porcelain fused to metal is the middle ground, a metal base with porcelain layered on top. Reasonably natural, reasonably strong, and cheaper than zirconia. Downside, after a few years that metal edge can start peeking out near the gum line, which not everyone loves.
Then plain metal. Nothing beats it for durability, but it looks like metal, obviously, so it mostly goes on back teeth where looks barely matter.

First visit is mostly talk and an X-ray if needed, figuring out which material fits your case and your wallet. Then the tooth gets shaped down a bit to make space for the crown. If it is a bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap get the same treatment, since they will be carrying extra load once everything is in place.
An impression or a digital scan goes off next so the lab can build your crown or bridge to match your bite exactly. That takes roughly a week or two. In between, you walk around with a temporary crown so the prepared tooth is not left bare. Once the real one arrives, your dentist checks how it sits, fixes anything that feels off, and cements it in. Two visits, sometimes three if adjustments are needed, and you are done.
Material drives most of the price difference, zirconia costs more than porcelain fused to metal, which costs more than plain metal. On top of that, if a root canal needs doing first, or if more than one tooth is involved, the number climbs.
Do not bother comparing random price ranges you find online, they rarely match reality. A written estimate after your actual consultation is the only figure worth planning around.
Somewhere between ten and fifteen years with reasonable care, sometimes longer if you went with zirconia, since it just holds up better over time. Six month checkups matter more than people think here too, mostly because small issues get caught early instead of turning into another full replacement.
Brush like normal, twice a day, but pay a little extra attention right where the crown meets your gum. If you have a bridge, get a floss threader and actually clean underneath the pontic, not just around the edges. Skip biting into ice cubes or rock hard candy. And if you grind your teeth at night without realising it, get a night guard, it will save you money down the line.
Comes up a lot in consultations. A bridge needs support from the teeth beside the gap. An implant does not, it stands completely on its own. Which one is right depends on how healthy those neighbouring teeth already are, what you are willing to spend, and honestly, whether you are thinking five years ahead or twenty.
